Customer Rating: Summary: True Indiana Jones Comment: This is a collecors piece for any true Indiana Jones fan. A collection of the masterpiece comic series released by Dark Horse in the 90's all in three volums. Everything about these comics are true Indiana Jones and perfect for anyone who is interested in exploring the ongoing adventures of our favorite hero. Not only is the artwork masterful and the stories are great, the overall quality of these rare comics are way better than the original Marvel Indy comics that came out in the 80's. Also these stories are concidered the further adventures of Indiana Jones and are all referenced within the official Indiana Jones chronology. if you want to know about the amazing adventures of Indiana Jones that took place inbetween the Last Crusade movie and the Crystal skull movie, then check out these comics! I personally really enjoyed these comics when I was a kid and I really enjoy them now. I really like the fact that I don't have to hunt down issue after issue. Especially for out of print comics. Here they ALL are in three awesome volumes.
Customer Rating: Summary: A decent collection Comment: Dark Horse Comics' "Indiana Jones Omnibus Volume 2" is a decent collection of Indy comics from the early 1990s. There are five stories collected here. This volume is slightly disappointing compared to the first volume. Despite having two more stories than the first book, I feel the stories in the first were a little better. Quality over quantity.
"Indiana Jones and the Golden Fleece" is the first story in the collection. It was published in 1994. It's 1941 and Indy is on an expedition in Greece when he encounters a crazed cult that is seeking a dagger Indy discovered to use in conjuction with the titular golden fleece. Indy is aided by a pregnant woman and eventually stops the cult from using the fleece for evil. I think this was the weakest of the stories. The story tends to drag and the climax just doesn't work for me. Also, the art is pretty average in this story. Oftentimes, Indy is drawn without his fedora, jacket, satchel, or whip without any real explanation. It might be a fanboyish complaint but it's just annoying.
"Indiana Jones and the Shrine of the Sea Devil" was published in "Dark Horse Comics" as a serial in 1994, hence why it's so short and the title appears every couple of pages. In 1935, Indy is deep sea diving to search for lost artifacts when he and the ship's crew encounter a giant squid. It's a pretty bland story actually and is what you'd expect. The ending is kind of cute. I won't spoil what it is.
"Indiana Jones and the Iron Phoenix" was published in 1994 and was originally intended to be a LucasArts game. However the game was cancelled but there was also going to be a comic adaptation similar to "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis," which is available in the Omnibus Vol 1. "Iron Phoenix" takes place in 1947, after WWII. Indy is in search of the Philosopher's Stone but repeatedly runs afoul of Russian agents and leftover Nazi scientists. The Russians simply want to retrieve the stone and its components for historical value and don't want Indiana Jones in their way. The Nazi scientists however want the stone so they can build the Iron Phoenix, which can reanimate the dead. This story is where the collection begins to step it up and become pretty good. The artwork is very stylized but it's quite good.
"Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny" was published in 1995 and is a great companion piece to "Last Crusade." The prologue picks up right at the end of the movie and then jumps ahead to 1945, on the cusp of the end of WWII. Indy is performing a dig in Ireland when he receives a letter from his father, who is lecturing in England. It seems Dr. Jones Sr. has been approached by a German fellow who is very interested in the Spear of Destiny. Naturally, he turns out to be a Nazi agent who thinks the Spear can turn the tide of the war. Indy and his father, along with a couple of college students, race to get to the Spear before the Nazis do. It's a fast paced story with good artwork and is very reminiscient of "Last Crusade."
"Indiana Jones and the Sargasso Pirates" was published in 1995 and is the best story in the collection. In 1939, Indy's on expedition in the arctic to uncover a Viking ship. But things go awry when he's betrayed by the captain of the ship he's rented. They become stranded upon an iceberg and barely survive before being rescued. The connection between Indy and the captain is clever and ties into how Indy survived his tussle retrieving the Cross of Coronado in the prologue of "Last Crusade." Aboard the rescue ship, Indy runs into a grifter who's pretending to be his brother and the woman accompanying him is on the run from the cops. They eventually find their way into the Sargasso Sea where they appear stuck. Much to their shock, a band of pirates reside among the ships that are stranded in the seaweed. What follows is a tale of betrayal, intrigue, and action. The artwork is consistently good and the pacing is great. Easily the best story in the collection.
Indiana Jones Omnibus Vol 2 is likely best for die hard fans of the intrepid archaeologist.
